HW Beauty Review: Can You Really Get An Even-toned And Glowing Complexion In 7 Days?

The LANEIGE Radian-C Cream promises to zoom in on pigmentation-causing melanin and cut it off at its source, so that dull skin and brown spots have no chance to take hold on your complexion. Our writer used it for a week to test its claims

Just for you

Makeup is a wonderful thing. With the right foundation and concealer, I can hide a multitude of imperfections. However, the quest for flawless skin should always start with what's underneath: skin. After all, no one can wear makeup 24/7, and a healthy and naturally glowing complexion is really the best canvas for makeup. Ideally, skin should be smooth, supple and clear.

The problem is that with age, a busy work schedule (hello, deadlines!) and late nights scrolling through Instagram, I've noticed that my complexion often looks tired and dull. Sometimes, I wake up in the morning looking like I never slept at all.

Plus, I've started noticing that my blemish scars seem to take longer to lighten and fade. And when I look closely in the mirror, I can see a faint sprinkling of age spots across my left cheek.

According to LANEIGE, one of the reasons for dull skin is non-visible dark spots that contribute to complexion looking lacklustre. To combat this, LANEIGE has introduced its new Radian-C Cream. It's a moisturiser that promises to target melanin (the skin's brown pigment) at the source – deep down within skin, to help you get a clear and glowing complexion.

Get ready to glow

Laneige Radian-C Cream

To achieve this, the LANEIGE Radian-C Cream uses a patented technology that combines three active ingredients that work together to keep skin healthy, luminous and youthful looking.

Ethyl ascorbyl ether (EAE) is a culmination of 25 years of vitamin research, and is hailed as the next-gen vitamin C derivative. It does everything you'd expect: brighten, firm and protect skin. More importantly, it is stable and doesn't oxidise in light and heat, which can diminish the antioxidant's efficacy.

To enhance the formula's brightening properties, there's Melasolv, an AMOREPACIFIC patented brightening ingredient that is 20 times more effective than niacinamide. It targets melanin production using a two-pronged approach. How it supposedly works: It rejuvenates the melanocytes (melanin-producing cells) to slow down melanin production, while boosting the specific genes responsible for giving skin radiance. To complete, vitamin E is added to protect skin against free radical damage.

And that's not all. The LANEIGE Radian-C Cream works even harder. It's said to improve skin's resilience against UV rays and protect it from blue light damage. Blue light protection is crucial because of our constant exposure to digital devices – smartphones, laptop screens and even LED lighting can trigger skin stress and inflammation, which in turn leads to premature skin ageing. Given our high dependence on digital devices, it is protection that we desperately need.

What happened when I used it

I used the new LANEIGE Radian-C Cream for seven days, and this is a daily breakdown of what I noticed about my skin.

Day #1:

Love the citrus scent upon application – it's instantly refreshing and is a nice reminder that the moisturiser is packed with vitamin C. I scoop out a dollop the size of a 20-cent coin. The cream, while slightly thick in texture, absorbs well, but leaves a slight sheen on the skin. I'm not fussed though, as I'm heading to bed.

Day #2:

My skin looks supple and feels soft when I wake up. That's a good start. But the LANEIGE Radian-C Cream feels a little rich for day, and my sunscreen doesn't sit well after application. I wonder if I've used too much. Throughout the day though, my skin feels comfortable, not dry or itchy.

Day #3:

I'm really enjoying using LANEIGE Radian-C Cream in my night-time skincare routine. It keeps my skin well-hydrated and seems to seal in all the goodness of my essence and serum. And most importantly, I'm waking up to a soft and supple complexion each morning. I could get used to this.

Day #4:

I'm finally getting the amount right: a 20-cent dollop at night and a 10-cent dollop for day. My sunscreen no longer pills, and my foundation lasts longer too.

Day #5:

I can see that some of my old blemish marks are starting to look less obvious. I'm hopeful.

Day #6:

My complexion is looking more even-toned, and I can get away with just using BB cream when I leave the house, although concealer is still needed to cover the odd stubborn acne spot and dark under-eye circles. This is an improvement from the days when foundation was my only best friend.

Day #7:

My complexion is looking more even-toned, smoother and supple. Even makeup, when I do the works, is adhering better too. And I can't seem to stop staring at my cheeks because there's a subtle lit-from-within glow now.

Over the course of the week of using LANEIGE Radian-C Cream, I noticed that my complexion looked gradually less tired. It also became smoother and more supple. I looked forward to checking my skin in the mirror every morning to chart its progress.

So while it's still too early to tell if it'll indeed deliver a radiant and flawless complexion, it's definitely giving my skin a head start in getting there.
